HISTORY
The journey to the present-day StoneRidge Retirement Living began in 1924 when three individuals, Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Burd, and Mrs. Burd’s sister, Miss Kathryn Rogers, had a burden to provide care for the elderly and purchased a farm near Herndon, PA. By 1938 the facility, referred to over the year as the “Home” had 33 residents.
By 1940 more space was needed so part of the former Albright College campus in Myerstown, PA was purchased. A number of renovations took place in subsequent years to the former campus and by 1955 the “Infirmary” as it was known was in place to respond to the growing need for nursing care.
Construction of a residential complex commenced in 1960. Between 1973 and 1974 the official name of the organization operating the “Home” was named the Evangelical Congregational Church Retirement Village (ECCRV) to better reflect its affiliation with the Evangelical Congregational Church.

The “Albright” campus continued to grow. In 1974 the 101-bed Bishop C. H. Mengel healthcare center opened. In 1975 the David S. Warfel Care Center (as it became known in 1977) was constructed to house additional nursing and Personal Care/residential beds. Additional beds were added with the subsequent construction of the Burd & Rogers Residential Care Center.
In 1985 the 4th floor of the Warfel Center was established as Specialized Care Unit — the first one of its kind in Lebanon County — for the treatment of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease or related disorders.
In 2000 the opportunity presented itself for ECCRV to purchase a financially troubled continuing care facility in Myerstown just blocks away from the existing Albright site, known as StoneRidge Village. ECCRV saw this purchase as a chance to extend its mission of providing retirement living and healthcare services to the area, as well as honor and assume the contracts of the existing StoneRidge residents who were facing considerable uncertainty.
StoneRidge Village was renamed StoneRidge — a community of ECC Retirement Village and in the first four years after purchase was quickly restored to sound financial health due to the tireless work of the management team and Board of Trustees.
While the “ECC” affiliation is meaningful to the founding and history of the organization, we learned in recent years that having the association in our name it did not provide us the widespread recognition we were seeking to create in order to further our mission. For this reason our Board of Trustees voted in October, 2008 to initiate the process to change the overall name of the organization from ECC Retirement Village to StoneRidge Retirement Living. Albright was renamed StoneRidge Towne Centre and the former “StoneRidge“ became StoneRidge Poplar Run.
The name change was official as of June 6, 2010. Today StoneRidge Retirement Living serves over 350 residents between our two communities.
